Putting iPad in control

rumours of the ipad 3 are rife - we use the ipad as a system controller

Apple sold 300,000 iPads in the US alone on the first day the product was available. But months before its launch, the Saville software development team was already developing products to enable iPad to be used with integrated AV/IT systems.

As with the iPod and the iPhone, it soon became clear that we would need to support the iPad for applications ranging from system control to media servers. Within weeks of its availability, the first Saville integrated systems were being tested and delivered with iPad in control.

The ‘designer’ appeal of the device as a boardroom control panel is understandable, particularly when allied to its universal internet and e-mail capabilities. The other major factor in its favour is its cost - some £2000 less than the cost of a professional touch panel controller like those from AMX or Crestron. But naturally, there are drawbacks…

Access to the functions of an installed AV system is not instant, as it is with a proprietary touch panel. The route via an appropriate App first has to be navigated. The other major disadvantage is its desirability – making it a highly prone to theft, until genuine security docking stations become available in the UK.
