"The big challenge was to install two complete facilities within a twelve week period. This included manufacturing the two custom made tables, which were hand built in our factory facility in York."
Saville Audio Visual was engaged by Cable&Wireless Worldwide to design and install duplicate telepresence systems for National Grid boardrooms in London and at Warwick, including the design and manufacture of two bespoke matching tables.
The systems had to interface with existing Tandberg T3 telepresence systems and offer as much functionality as possible. The boardroom also had to be compatible with other HD and SD videoconferencing systems within the National Grid network and at other locations around the world. Whilst providing a telepresence facility, it was equally important that the room functioned as a boardroom, so the technology was designed to blend in and complement rather than dominate the meeting environment.
The client’s brief was that the system should be easy and intuitive to use, even though it had to be capable of being used in various videoconferencing and presentation modes. To achieve this, Saville included a large format AMX touch panel, programmed to control all aspects of the system.
Design
The display consists of three separate 65-inch Panasonic screens, using
DViD signal switching and processing. Although designed as a digital
solution, the facility also needed to accommodate inputs from analogue
sources such as the VGA output from laptop PCs, with the ability
to display content from PCs and other sources during a conference,
without detracting from the main images being displayed on the three
screens. The design is based around three Tandberg C60 codecs with
HD cameras, connected via two Extron digital matrices.
When content such as PowerPoint or an Excel spreadsheet is introduced, this is displayed on nine 22-inch LCD widescreen monitors housed on electric monitor lifts set into the custom built table at each location. Content can also be introduced either from the resident PC/DVD/BluRay player installed in the equipment rack or any one of the five laptop input points set into the table. These inputs have network and USB connections as well as analogue VGA and DViD inputs. Audio pick-up within the room is via two Tandberg ceiling mounted Audio Science microphone systems.
